Microplastics, also known as MPs, are fragments of plastic 5 millimeters in size or less. While there is still much to be studied and learned about microplastics, two things are already clear: microplastics are everywhere in our air, soil, and water, and this can be detrimental to our health.
Just how harmful microplastics really are isn’t yet clear. However, it’s a good idea to try to limit your exposure to them as much as possible. An easy way to do this? Choose bottled water without microplastics–that is, water in aluminum bottles.
Read on to learn what microplastics are, what role plastic bottled water plays in creating them, and how My Own Water is committed to delivering you safer bottled water–even as bottled water without microplastics is the long-term goal.

How are microplastics made?

There’s a lot of buzz about microplastics in the news lately, as well as their potential impact on the environment and human health. However, there is less understanding of where microplastics come from.
Some microplastics are manufactured intentionally, as part of synthetic particles like polyester and nylon or in exfoliating microbeads for common personal care products like toothpaste and face wash. It may also be the case that processed foods contain microplastics.
Other microplastics are created inadvertently, such as when larger plastics items such as plastic bags break down from exposure to UV-rich sunlight or from absorption by soil or the ocean. This can happen as a result of waste mismanagement, or even from plastic products sitting in a landfill.
Unfortunately, a major source of microplastics, in both the environment and in the human body, is plastic bottled water.

Why does plastic bottled water contain microplastics?

Plastic bottled water creates microplastics at every step from manufacturing to human consumption:

  • Manufacturing – During bottling, microplastics can enter the water due to manufacturing processes or exposure to airborne contaminants.
  • Materials – The bottles and caps in plastic bottled water are often made of polyethylene terephthalate, or PET. PET is very prone to degrading, or shedding, microplastics into water due to heat, light, or physical stress such as being squeezed or crushed, including during the transportation process.
  • Consumption – Drinking water that has microplastics in it can result in respiratory issues and inflammation, though again, the full impact of microplastics on the human body over time is not clear.

While this sounds scary, the good news is that it is possible to drink bottled water with less microplastics. My Own Water is proud to offer a safer way to enjoy hydration, while growing your business in the process.

What are ways to drink bottled water without microplastics?

My Own Water offers two kinds of water bottles that are safer than most custom plastic water bottles on the market:

  • PET-free custom plastic water bottles – My Own Water was the first bottled water company in California to switch to PET-free custom plastic bottled water. Our PET-free plastic bottles are more durable, made of more recycled materials, and less prone to shedding microplastics than most other plastic bottle options. However, any kind of plastic bottled water will likely contain some microplastics.
  • Custom aluminum water bottles – My Own Water’s aluminum water bottles are BPA-free and designed with linings built to withstand wear. Aluminum itself does not contain microplastics, making a better choice if you are concerned about exposure to these particles. It is also infinitely recyclable. In fact, around 75% of aluminum in use today is recycled, making it one of the most reused substances on the planet. And because our bottle liners are built to last, there is likely much less risk of contact with microplastics than in plastic water bottles made with PET.

All our water bottles are shipped with non-leaching packaging.

How is My Own Water’s bottled water different?

At My Own Water, we believe that delivering a high-quality custom hydration product is a benefit for everyone: you, your business, and your clients and customers. Here’s why you should choose us for all your custom bottled water needs:

And with around 75% of Americans chronically dehydrated, water is clearly something everyone needs. A custom-printed water bottle allows your customer and clients to not only link your brand to a premium product, but to show it to others as they take your bottle with them throughout the day. My Own Water can help you design a beautiful custom bottle labels in as many colors as you want. For large orders on aluminum bottled water, we can even print your logo directly on the bottle.

Microplastics are a large-scale problem, and it’s important to focus on taking small, attainable steps to minimize your exposure to them.
